Naxos Castle The city of Naxos is one of the most beautiful cities of Greece. Naxos has been under the Venetian influence for centuries. All over the city you can see many pieces of Venetian architecture. The Venetian Castle, Naxos is one of the main recommended tourist destinations.
The castle is acknowledged as one of the most beautiful pieces of architecture of the Cycladic villages. The construction of the castle started following the orders of Marco Sanudo who conquered the Cyclades in 1207. Naxos Island became the seat of the Duchy of the Aegean.
The Castle was built after the 4th crusade.
The castle was the residence of Sanudo. Side by side there were various institutions and administrations of the Duchy in the castle. The castle was designed by an engineer. The pentagonic shape of the Naxos Castle is its main characteristic. The Castle was built following Venetian style. Located close to it are a number of mansions, beautiful buildings, monuments and churches constructed on the paved narrow streets.
