Kouros (Apollonas)
The village of Apollonas with its nice beach, clean and clear water and a settlement with about 150 residents living in small traditional houses.
Apollonas is a beautiful fishermen’s village on the north-eastern coast of Naxos, with an area where ancient marble quarries have been found. Near the village, at the entrance to an ancient quarry, there is an unfinished statue (a kouros) lying on the ground (10.45m. in leght).
It stands in the spot where it was being carved, from where it has never been moved. It dates to the beginning of the 6th century BC.Believed to portray the God of Apollo, while some other reports say that it is probably a sculpture of the god Dionysus. Eventually ,it was found that it was part of a Temple belonging to the God of Apollo.
